Keep Fighting the Good Fight

The definition of fight the good fight, besides the biblical version, means, “Do your best. Do what is morally right.”

“I follow three rules: Do the right thing, do the best you can, and always show people you  care.”                                                                                     -Lou Holtz

If you have been a reader of ENS on Sales, you know that one of the things I feel very strongly about and am willing to stand up and fight for is that of our local businesses, and the battle they have with out-of-town e-commerce companies that do not support our communities in any way.

In a little over one week, the holiday shopping season begins. For many of your local retailers, this holiday season will be much more than fighting the good fight; it will be a battle of either staying in business or shutting the doors.

For the past three years, we have asked and suggested that you stand up and fight for your local businesses in the battle against online, out-of-town, e-commerce companies. Are we winning the battle? The answer for most is No! Due to the COVID pandemic, both Amazon and Wayfair posted huge profits in both Q2 and Q3 of 2020.

So, the question is… Do you sit back and let them continue to pick away at our local retailers, or do you keep fighting the good fight?

I can assure you that regardless of how the local businesses fair during the holiday shopping season, they will remember who stood up and fought for them.

“Management is doing things right; Leadership is doing the right things.” – Peter Drucker

We hope that you choose to do the right thing and air ads in support of your local business community. To help, we have written a new “Buy Local” script titled, ‘Twas Just Weeks Before ChristmasClick here to receive a FREE copy of the script.

Keep Fighting the Good Fight!

A Politically Incorrect Message

Those of you that have been receiving our ENS on Sales for the past several years, know that at this time of year Wayne posted his politically incorrect “Merry Christmas” message.

Now that Wayne is retired and basking in the Florida sun at Christmas time, it’s my turn to carry on his tradition, although, I will put my own twist on it.

First, I agree with Wayne, that “politically correct’ is an oxymoron. Politicians, to at least 50% of the public, are never correct and now more than ever seem to put more emphasis on getting elected or re-elected than doing what’s right.

However, unlike Wayne, I NEVER agonized over saying “Merry Christmas” to people. If I were to guess, I doubt Wayne ever really agonized over it either, as he is one of the nicest men you will ever meet. I think he was just being “politically correct”!

As they say, “Christmas” (the birth of Christ) is the reason for the season, and “Merry” means to be joyful, to celebrate. So, if by saying “Merry Christmas” I offend you, I apologize, but I am not sorry! I too believe in recognizing the role that history and heritage play in making people, nations, and cultures what they are, and it’s something I am not ready to deny! Likewise, I am not offended at all when a friend believes differently than I. I am simply honored to be called their friend regardless of their religious or political views.

So, as you celebrate this Christmas season, count your blessings. We are fortunate to be working in such a great profession with such talented people. You get to be creative and you play a major role in helping others be successful. While our work is serious, it’s also fun and rewarding. You get the opportunity to help businesses become more successful, and these successful businesses, in turn, employ more people and pay more taxes. You help non-profits do “good” for others, and you help your communities, towns, and cities become more successful.

We entertain and inform people, adding laughter and insight to their lives. We keep them informed, and we keep them safe. Very few others can say this.

In honor of Wayne, we use his politically incorrect words for our closing;

Merry…Happy…Greetings…Wishes…Seasons…Holidays…Christmas… however you want to say it, we wish you a blessed, safe, and Merry Christmas from Wayne, Angela, Rick and Belinda at ENS Media.

A Politically-Incorrect Message

Those of you who have been receiving our ENS on Sales over the last twenty years, know it’s time for my annual politically incorrect “Merry Christmas” message. (Although, I’m increasingly convinced that ‘politically correct’ is an oxymoron because I don’t know any politicians who are ‘correct.’ They all seem to care more about getting elected than they do about doing what’s right.)

I used to agonize over whether I should say “Merry Christmas” because not everyone celebrates this Christian event.

But I believe in recognizing the role that history and heritage play in making people, nations, businesses, and cultures what they are, and Christmas is a part of the North American heritage I’m not ready to deny.

I’m not offended when a friend wishes me Happy Hanukah, and I feel honored when another friend invites me to her faith’s New Year’s celebration in November. There is no denying that Christianity played a role in making North America what it is today…..good or bad.

And I’ve never seen anyone from any faith object to getting a day off on December 25th, even though they know how the holiday originated, so Merry Christmas everyone!

‘Tis the season to rejoice and count our blessings.

As you take time over the holidays, I invite you to reflect upon how fortunate we are to be in this business.

We get paid for helping other people, it doesn’t get any better than that!

Whether we’re helping charitable organizations with a fund-raising campaign, or helping a business to grow and provide more employment with our advertising campaigns, we’re helping, informing and entertaining people every day!

Those people who punch a clock or work on an assembly line can only fantasize about having the opportunity to work with the diverse and creative group of peers we see every day. Some of us are wacky, some disciplined and some adventurous and others are focused…..together we produce a product and service like no other!

And we have a purpose bigger than ourselves! We transform lives. We help needy children by promoting Christmas toy drives. We entertain people, adding laughter, music, and insight to their otherwise boring lives. We keep people informed, make them think, and even let them know if they’ll need an overcoat on the way to work today.

We help them avoid traffic jams and to make enlightened decisions at election time.

For the most part, our jobs are not hazardous, we don’t brave the elements on a daily basis, and I don’t see a lot of calluses or sore backs in our business.

I heard an interview with country singer Kenny Rogers where he said: “Find a way to get paid for doing something you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.” I think that’s where all of us in broadcasting are.

So merry ….happy……greetings……season’s…… wishes….. however you say it, we wish you all the best in 2018 and beyond. Merry Christmas from Wayne, Angela, Rick and Belinda at ENS Media Inc!

Make it Feel Like Christmas Now

While your salespeople are boating, golfing and enjoying the summer weather, it can be difficult to have thoughts of sugar plums dancing in their heads.

But your clients and prospects are planning their Christmas campaigns NOW.

You know, “the early bird gets the worm.”

Yet many media account executives will be panicked and running around like frantic last-minute Christmas shoppers, trying to pick up the crumbs left by more professional account executives who captured their prospects’ Christmas budgets while they were still in the planning stages.
I can still recall my rookie days when I called on my prospects with our newly-released ‘Christmas package’ only to hear, “Sorry, but we gave our budget to the newspaper just last week.”
While it might no longer be “the newspaper”, you can bet there are countless traditional and new media reps who will be pounding the pavement around mid-October in the hopes of capturing lucrative Christmas advertising dollars.
If you want your competitors to hear that you have already captured their prospects’ Christmas budgets, you need to begin planning your Christmas sales meeting NOW.
A properly planned Christmas Sales Meeting can put your sales team in the mood to be the early bird, to be the first in the door to talk to their prospects about the important Christmas selling season.
You need to plan now, for your Christmas sales meeting the first week after Labor Day. And it needs to feel like Christmas!
